World Homeless Day is an annual event, and on 10th October 2021 people around the world will mark the day in a variety of ways, all with the intention of changing the lives of people experiencing homelessness in their local community.
Today, everyone should have a safe and secure home, but the fact is, many don’t. Situations of homelessness leave many feeling like a burden and, as well as making them feel lonely, isolated, and ashamed, can have a devastating effect on their mental health.
Homelessness takes many forms: sofa surfing, or sleeping on public transport, or in cars and tents. It’s incredibly dangerous with violent thefts being commonplace. The Covid pandemic has added an additional complication, as personal cleanliness can be incredibly difficult. As we march towards the cold, winter months, the risk to life is more acute for those who find themselves homeless.
But it doesn’t need to be this way. The concept of World Homeless Day emerged from discussions between people working together to respond to homelessness. Its purpose is to draw attention to the need and invite local communities to get involved and be part of the solution.
The Eden Gate Centre, Newport is just one of the partners working hard to reduce levels of homeless across the city and surrounding area and this year, we are asking for your help. Get involved by simply donating much needed items for those who find themselves living on our streets. Currently, we are really in need of new underwear, socks, deodorant, and wet wipes as well as Porridge Pots.
You can donate these items by calling Eden Gate on 01633 243235. If we don’t answer it’s probably because we are dealing with the visitors who have accessed our centre for a warm drink, toast, a shower, help with paperwork or to use our clothes washing facilities. Please leave a message and we will get back to you.
This October, remember World Homeless Day and join with us in helping to tackle homelessness.
