Team Leader Thursday Drop-in
I have been attending the Thursday evening drop-in for about five years, starting on the Teen Challenge bus. After about a year or so I brought my chess set along one evening and discovered that one of the Eastern European homeless men was a very experienced and skilled chess player. It was amazing to be soundly beaten at chess and then go back to my nice warm house whilst the victor went back to the bus station to spend the night!
Since this time we have brought other board games along to Thursday evenings and they have proved very popular. It is important that the helpers on the drop-in nights look forward to it and enjoy the company of the guests. I come away from Thursday nights feeling enriched and blessed by all the people I meet. Sometimes I think they are helping me more than I am helping them!
Before each Thursday evening starts we pray that we may communicate something of the love of Jesus to these needy people and we ask God to help us in our weakness. It is wonderful when a guest asks us to pray for them. The hardest part is finishing at 9 pm and having to leave some who will be spending the night on the streets. We try to help them as much as we can with warm clothes, sleeping bags and a pack of sandwiches and a hot drink but in the end we have to leave them and ask our heavenly Father to look after them.
